AMSA Annual Meeting

The American Medical Association Alliance (AMAA) will hold its 88th Annual Meeting from June 17-19, 2012 at the Swissôtel in Chicago, Illinois.

Bringing together state delegates from all over the country, the three-day meeting will feature a year’s worth of group discussions, administrative
sessions, training symposiums and much more.

Thanks to a shorter agenda than in years past, the AMAA will be including more networking opportunities and educational sessions in this year’s proceedings, as reported on its official website.

The Colorado Medical Society Connection strives to maintain a strong presence
at these meetings and would like to have as many of its members as possible attend. For more information on making the trip to Chicago this spring, contact CMSC President Mary Rice by email at
mlyonsrice43@yahoo.com or by phone
at 719-657-0394.

Interested parties should also keep an eye on the AMAA’s website, www.amaalliance.org, for additional meeting details as the year unfolds.

Attorney General joins with DEA, local law enforcement to
announce statewide prescription drug take-back events

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced today that local law enforcement agencies across the state will partner with the Drug
Enforcement Administration to hold prescription drug take-back events on Saturday, October 29.

“Prescription drug abuse is one of the fastest growing problems facing Colorado today,” Suthers said. “This take-back effort and partnership between the Drug
Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement across the state will
help keep these potent drugs off the streets and out of the hands of youth and
others to abuse.”

Law enforcement agencies have collected thousands of pounds of prescription drugs across Colorado during previous statewide take-back efforts in October 2010 and April 2011.

“By safely disposing of unused or expired prescription drugs on Saturday,
October 29, Coloradoans have the opportunity to prevent accidental
poisonings or misuse of these powerful medications by members of their
family,” said Kevin Merrill, acting special agent in charge for the DEA in Denver. “Please visit our Web site,
www.dea.gov, for more information and
to learn about drop-off locations near you.”

Consumers should not simply throw away or flush controlled substances. Often the chemicals contained in these drugs can harm wildlife or the environment. Drugs left in trash bins or by the curb also can be stolen and abused. Federal
law requires that controlled substances be accepted by a certified peace
officer. Controlled substances, unlike antibiotics and non-controlled prescription medications, cannot be taken back by pharmacies or doctors’ offices.
