President ’s Corner: I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving with plenty of turkey, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Counting our blessings, in addition to our wonderful friends and families we have so many things to be thankful for. Thank you to all the members of the alliance and the board for donating your time, energy, ideas, and friendship. The Barnes and Noble Book Browse will be on December 3. This is a great way to get some holiday shopping done. Barnes and Noble will donate a portion of the proceeds to MCMSA. Thanks to Sue Magee for organizing this fund raising event. The Holiday Party follows on December 6 at Stephanie and Brian Witwers beautiful home. I am looking forward to celebrating the season with all of you. Don’t forget to RSVP to Robin Heil for this fun and festive event. Kim Moore is once again organizing the AMA Foundation Holiday Share Card. This program offers an easy way to send holiday greetings to all members of the medical community. Your contribution to the AMA Foundation supports medical education and community service programs in exchange for being listed on the cards. I am looking forward to other upcoming events in the New Year. Kathy Tarman and Angela Hegstrom are planning the Progressive Dinner this year so it is sure to be amazing. Happy Holidays! Community Corner Hilltop Community Services MCMSA has a history of close ties to Hilltop Community Services, so our board thought it would be good to reconnect with them. Since 1950, they have provided services for the underserved ranging from prenatal to retirement living. Hilltop’s 22 programs provide services to 20,000 individuals each year in our area. As the holidays approach please consider these giving opportunities. · $25 pays for one pregnant woman at B4 Babies to receive prenatal education, resources, and access to health care. · $60 covers care for two women to stay at Latimer House’s safehouse for a single night and receive food, clothing, personal supplies, and case management. · $100 pays for one young mother to receive home visitation, support groups and parenting skills which gives her the tools needed to move toward self-sufficiency and a better parent-child relationship. · $200 provides respite care for one special needs child at Kiddin’ Around Learning Center for five days. · Donations of household and personal items benefit women and children in the safehouse, backpacks for school age children, art supplies, and grocery gift cards. · A meaningful donation in the name of a loved one or friend is always appreciated. For more information visit their website at www.htop.org or contact Barbara Salogga |

What is SAVE ? Stop America’s Violence Everywhere (SAVE) is an initiative launched by the AMA Alliance in 1995. As part of SAVE, state and county Alliances provide simple lessons in conflict resolution to school children, battered women and their families, and homeless families. This year we have 34 second grade classrooms participating in the “Hands are Not for Hitting” activity. Approximately 7500 work books and bookmarks have been made available to teachers and counselors. “I can choose” books are distributed to First graders. They illustrate alternatives to violent behavior and increase children’s self respect. Second graders have fun with "Hands Are NOT For Hitting" an art project in which the kids make handprint banners, play charades, make placemats, and brainstorm conflict resolution techniques. Third Graders receive "I Can Handle Bullies" activity books. These workbooks help to generate a dialogue about bullying, its effects on children, and ways to overcome bullying in school and on the playground. The "Talk to your kids about bullying" bookmarks are supplied to Fourth graders and offer parents simple tips on how to talk to their children about bullying. We have developed a coalition with Grand Valley School District and every counselor is working with SAVE material to teach conflict resolution and anger management skills as well as help students apply them in everyday situations. Our hope is that exposure to this message for four consecutive years will strongly reinforce their anti-violence education. Our secondary goal is family awareness, discussion, and education when these children take the projects into their homes and communities. The cost each year is $5500-6000, previously funded by the MCMSA progressive dinner, grants, and the MCMS. I wish to give a big thank you to Sue Magee, Robin Heil, Lynn Paoli, and Jeannine Maier for assembling all the workbooks. You all did a fantastic job. Don’t miss the banner display at Mesa Mall Oct. 20 – Nov. 1!!! |
